Palmas Arborea

Palmas Arborea is a pretty town of medieval origins, which owes its name to the abundance of palm groves in its territory. It is historically linked to agriculture and livestock.

Lying on a plain, this village of multiform landscapes is set around the church of Sant'Antioco and characteristic clay houses. It is located at the foot of the volcanic massif of Monte Arci and overlooks the calm Pauli Maiori lagoon which is one of the dampest and most important areas in Italy. Palmas Arborea is a true paradise for birdwatchers, thanks to the great variety of species present, these include the Western Swamphen, the Purple Heron and the White-headed duck.

During the celebrations for their patron saint, on the third Sunday after Easter, the “Palmaresi” perform courageous acrobatics on horseback: is pariglias, the Palmaresi pairs, is preceded by the characteristic corsa de is tre aneddus, race of the three rings, where the horsemen try to centre 3 suspended rings placed at a distance of 15 meters from each other, with a wooden spear called "su mazzuccu".

The municipality boasts a dense forest on the slopes of Mount Arci, a forest of holm oaks and Mediterranean scrub, with flashes of cork and downy oaks, and goes by the name of the forest of Sa Dispensa. Here you can find both equipped and unspoiled historical areas dating from the Neolithic era to the Nuragic age with their megalithic circles.
