Santa Giusta

Santa Giusta owes its name to the local saint to whom the splendid 12th century Romanesque Basilica church is dedicated. It stands on a settlement established in the Bronze Age and which developed in the Phoenician-Punic city of Othoca which was one of the most important centres of the Gulf of Oristano starting from the eighth century B.C. Testimony of this civilization, originating in the Roman era, is found in the necropolis near the Church of Santa Severa and on the Roman Bridge at the southern entrance of the town which is close to the lagoon which is also one of the largest in Sardinia.

The large pond of Santa Giusta is part of a lagoon system, among which the lagoon of Pauli Maiori emerges for importance. Surrounded by spontaneous vegetation and populated by rich fauna and avifauna, the pond acts as a hinge between the marine environment of Abarossa beach and the hilly landscape of Mount Arci, on the edge of the splendid Acquafrida forest, which mainly consists of holm oak woods.

There is not only history and natural environment among the riches of the town. An urban trek will bring to light stone sculptures, murals, precious ceramic panels and the work of Salvatore Garau "Eel of Mars", a particular iron installation that represents the tail of an eel.

The community of Santa Giusta identifies itself in its traditions that are shown by way of festivals, events, crafts and food culture. The organization of "The regatta of is Fassonis", the primitive boats used for fishing in ponds since ancient times, is thanks to the culture of work in the lagoon.
