Solarussa

Solarussa owes its name to the red colour of the local land: Solum Rossum was the Latin toponym of this area that boasts historical and archaeological evidence of the presence of man since ancient times.

Among the numerous settlements of the Nuragic age, the complex of Pidighi stands out, consisting of the nuraghi Pidighi and Muru Accas, with their respective settlements and nearby sources of water. The Romans established a rest station along the Via Maxima that connected Tharros to Forum Traiani. The ruins of a well, putzu 'e Angius is evidence of this settlement.

Near this settlement stands the Romanesque church of San Gregorio Magno, in whose honour the most heartfelt celebration of the Solarussa community is held in October. The parish church is dedicated to the patron Saint Peter the Apostle and next to it stands the small church Chiesa Delle Anime. In the upper part of the town the church of the Madonna delle Grazie is found. Precious works of art can be admired inside these churches.

Rising in a very fertile territory, the town has a strong agricultural vocation. Among the excellences there is viticulture: in Bennaxi, a flourishing countryside of Solarussa, the Vernaccia vineyards flourish. A festival is also dedicated to this delicious wine accompanied by tastings of local dishes.
